Edson industries had for years had a contract with miller correctional facility in Dixon. The prison suplied laboers for various tasks. It had become a lucritive arrangement for both the prison and Edson industry.
It was seen as good for edson, good for the prison and good for the area. It was seen as good for the prisoners. They learned skills that they could take with them post incarceration.
Edson industry was apluded for there efforts to help rehabilitate inmatess. They were credited with Giving convicts a new lease on life. Some refered to Edson as great humanitarians. Others felt that they would exploiting the inmates. They wanted cheep labor. This was practically slave labor
Craig Edson the ceo defended his compony policy. He claimed that it was good for everyone. He denied the charges that Edson industry was exploating the workers. He did not believe that he was a humiterian but hardly am aadvocate of forced labor.
Every time the contract between Edson and miller corectional was up there were protest. There was a lot of debates but the contract was always renewed. The opposition was mostly full of sound ans fury but signified nothing. The opposition though in the minority was very loud.
Those opposed to it had little aithourity or influeninfluence. Most in the town and the greater region liked the program.
Craig Edson held his business meeting. “I see that participation in the work partnership program with miller corectional is way down. What is going on?” craig edson asked.
“We noticed that too. We were concerned that there might be a decrease in interest in the program. We found that odd sence inmates earn credets towards eralier release. We called warden summers and asked him what was going on?” the vp of operations bennet more said.
He then added, “he says that because the crime rate has taken a huge plummet due to new policies aimed at reducing crime have worked. There are less crime and less prison sentences. While it is good for society as a whole. It is not so good for us or our bottom line. ”
“What can we fo about it? This is a huge threat to our company and our business modle.something has to be done. ” vp of finance Andre richardson said.
“What can we do ” a bored member asked. For that they consulted the conpony legal consultant. “Well we can sue the prison for breach of contract. They are technically in breach of the agreement . i am confident any judge would side with us. ” Lauren traner said.
“We would look petty and meen sprited.” vp of marketing jeff arlow remarked. ” we run the risk of back lash. It is a huge risk. It is a potentional p.r nightmere. “Wendy Davidson said.
“I will speak to the warden. I will see what we can do. Lauren i want you to prepare a law suit . i want you to sit on it. I want it to be a nuclear option. I want it ready just in case. I am hopping another solution can be found. ” Craig said. Lauren agreed. The discussion was tabled for now.
Craig called the warden and told him hus concerns. “Well i understand your concerns. Crime is down. The law and order policies are working. I have no idea what to tell you. “The warden said.
Craig did not like that answer. He did not like that answer at all. He decided to talk to the mayor of the town that the corectional facility was housed.
“This is a good thing. We are ranked one of the safest places in the states. This is good for tourism and the overall economy. ” the mayor said.
“Yes. I need a work force. I need prisoners. ” craig said.”what do you expect me to do about it?” the mayor asked.”either make more arrests or pass new laws making more crimes pubisible for prison time.” Craig insisted.
“You want me to invent more crimes so you can make more money? You do know capitalism is not especially popular these days especially with millennials. If we are caught they could run the entire town council out of town. ” the mayor said.
“All you have to do is to sell it properly. Make yourself out to be tough on crime. Call it the beter society act or something. It is all in the marketing .you do this or i will make your life a living nightmere. You know full well that i can. ” Edson told him.
The council made a series of new laws. All of the laws required jail time for infraction. These laws made littering, jay walking and spitting a crime that would necessitate jail time.library books not be returned was now a crime. Everything they thought they could get away with was criminilized. Even soms fowel lungrege was made illegal. At the same time they tried to encourage tourism some that they would have fresh supplies of laboers who would could unwittingly commit a crime.
Edson industry prefered female prisoners. Most of the female inmates were low level offenders. Many of the crimes were non violent.they were fairly docile. They were goid workers. They did not get inti fights. They were easy to work with.
Julie and Carly were on vacation from college. They were thrilled to have time off. They decided to just go on a road trip. They had no real destination in mind.they just drove. They ended up in Dixon.
They stopped at a rest stop. A cop was on potrol. They slamed the car door. They exceeded the town noise ordinance. The cop stoped.”i am placing you two under arest.” the officer said.”on what charge?” julie asked. “You violated the noise ordinance. “The officer answered.
They were taken to the station. They were finger printed and there mug schot was taken. They spent the night in cell.
The next day they were taken to court. The charges were read. “How doyou plea?” the judge asked.” we both plea guilty!” julie said.they figured it would be a fine of some kind.
“Very well. I hereby sentence you two to life in prison. ” the judge said. They were stuned. Before they could protest any further they were ejected from the court room.
They were taken to miller corectional. They were striped naked. They were given showers. They were put into orange jumo suit and were barefoot. They were assigned to dig holes and moved sand. They worked for 12 houers a day. They were paid for it but sense they had life sentences there was not much that they could do with it.
The program was a huge success. Edson was making mony again. They had tons of cheap workers. They were making lots and lots of mony.
Lauren was realy happy. She spearheaded the effort. She was in Craig’s good graces. She went out to celebrate. On her way back, she had the window down and the radio was way up. She got stoped.
Lauren was arrested. She knew that she was in a lot if trouble. She knew that due to her lobying she was looking at a life sentence.
She pled guilty and sure enough she got a life sentence. She was taken from the courtroom to miller coeectional facility.
She was striped and changed into a jump suit. She was put to work. She made sure no one found out that this was her idea. She worked hard. She kept to herself.
This is a work of fiction and fantasy. It is not based on real life juative system.
My inspiration was the rise of partnership between prisons and companies and the rise of private prisons and well as crimes such as marijuana possession and political crimes.
